Event #8: Calculating Storage in Advance of Purchase
November 8, 2016 / 1pm-2pm EST
Understanding the requirements and simple processes of calculating the storage requirements of an IP or hybrid video storage system in advance of need is a bit more than just taking the number of cameras in the system times the number of images per second that are to be recorded. A poorly calculated storage requirement can and ultimately will cost the end-user several hundreds to tens of thousands of unbudgeted dollars. This session is designed to provide a step-by-step process to ensure all factors of the system are combined into the calculations prior to making any estimates or purchases.
The process of storage calculation should be of major interest to all involved in the design, install, set up, service, purchase and/or operation of a CCTV system. This is because there are at least 5 different points in the process where potential storage requirements can be accurately projected. Prior to signing off on a purchase the end-user should ask for the documentation of the storage calculation and then they should know for what they are looking. Prior to final signoff on any system, large or small, the integrator should be able to demonstrate (through 72 hours of continuous use) that the actual storage rates are in line with, and within 10 to 20 percent of, the original total projection. Over purchase of storage space is another equally expensive problem with many systems. It follows the old adage; "When in doubt, double your projection." The problem is that the only one that benefits from this type of lazy work is the manufacturer of storage machinery.
